Chapter 6

Soil pH

Anion Exchange Capacity

Soil pH is defined as the negative logarithm of the hydrogen (H⁺) ion concentration is a measure of acidity or alkalinity of soil. The more acid a solution, the more H+ ions present. Water (H2O), for example, is a molecule composed of hydrogen and oxygen. In nature, a very small percentage of water will dissociate or break apart and form hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxyl ions (OH¯).
