Soil Nutrient Cycling
Calcium and Magnesium Cycle
There are many similarities between the behavior of calcium and magnesium with those of potassium in soils. They are all released from minerals by weathering and occur as exchangeable cations. They are the most abundant in young and minimally weathered soils and least abundant in intensively weathered and leached soils. In contrast to potassium, there is no significant fixation of calcium or magnesium into unavailable forms. The calcium and magnesium cations set free by weathering are adsorbed onto the cation exchange sites. An equilibrium tends to be established between the exchangeable and solution forms.
